What is Better Block St. Joseph?
Better Block St. Joseph ( STJ) was launched in 2012 by a loose coalition of concerned citizens who were interested in revitalizing downtown St. Joseph, Missouri. The two-day event seeks to showcase what an active, vibrant streetscape would look like in St. Joseph, Missouri. Better Block STJ will temporarily transform two downtown blocks with pop-up shops, cafes, and art galleries, new street furniture and plantings, façade improvements, and many other programs and activities put together by the community. Hosted and facilitated by MO- KAN, the area’s regional planning council, Better Block STJ has grown in its second year to include the City of St. Joseph, the St. Joseph metropolitan planning organization, and a diverse group of local small businesses, property owners, artists and musicians. For volunteer opportunities, please contact Megan at (816) 233-3144 .
When, Where & What to Expect
Better Block St. Joseph will occur for two days only on Friday, May 3 (11:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and Saturday, May 4 (9:00 AM – 7:00 PM) . Focusing its improvements on the two block stretch of Francis Street , between 7th and 9th Streets , Better Block STJ will transform vacant storefronts and the underutilized public spaces of this historic downtown St. Joseph location into a vibrant, mixed-use community. Together with artists, musicians and kid-friendly sports activities, Better Block STJ will breathe new life into an area of downtown in search of a renaissance. Strategically located along the Apple Blossom Parade route, this year’s event will showcase the potential of a lively downtown to the entire region.
Why We Think It’s Worthwhile
The purpose of Better Block STJ is to increase awareness and elevate the public discourse on the efforts to revitalize the urban core by showcasing what a vibrant downtown could be. Better Block STJ collaboratively leverages a relatively small investment in time, energy and sweat equity into a much larger injection of economic, social, environmental and cultural capital in the historic core. Our motto is a Better Block today; a Better Downtown tomorrow.
