A Park to Honor Our Veterans

This project is an effort to fund a beautiful and memorable sidewalk through 300 Years of Military History. The segmented walkway will be the first installment to the Veterans Memorial Park of Kentucky and will serve as a visual indicator of major US military engagements since 1776. This is a significant and moving project to honor our nation’s heroes.

The Veterans Memorial Park of Kentucky will be built outside of Louisville, KY in Oldham County next to Veterans Memorial Parkway, a segment of KY 329. The mission of the Park is two-fold – to recognize those who served their country, especially those who paid the ultimate price in their service, and to educate the community, visitors, and especially the youth in military history. This joint mission will make the project one of the most unique parks for veterans in the United States. The plan is to dedicate the Park in 2013.

Park Design

Each sidewalk segment will have a granite insert with a year, starting with 1776. Colored segments of the walk represent at least one American death in military action that year. Sequenced metal markers on granite bases that provide information about U.S. military actions will be unveiled at the dedication and annually. There will also be smaller markers that will provide quotes concerning veterans and the military throughout the Park. A gazebo and speaker’s stand will be built for ceremonies that occur in the Park.

Park Location

Building the Park on county school property indicates both the support of the school system and provides a greater opportunity of youth awareness of the project (there are a high school, middle school, and two elementary schools in the Park’s immediate area). Youth from both the high school and middle schools will be directly involved in the Park. For example, high school students will research information for the military action markers and middle school students will research quotes concerning veterans and the military. An Eagle Scout project was recently completed for the Park in the form of an outdoor classroom. The middle school’s Beta Club is watering a Liberty Tree Foundation tree that was planted in the Park this past summer.
