Why restore the Katz Clock Tower?
Fixing the clock tower is a statement of strength and vitality for our neighborhood. This project’s goal is to restore an old, beautiful and unique piece of Midtown culture. It is a declaration of neighborhood and city pride. We believe Kansas City is a strong and unique city. We want to celebrate its history, one of passionate loyalty and endurance.
We do not believe that simply fixing some clock will change the neighborhood. However, working together to restore this local cultural icon is a symbol of the Midtown community. Restoring this clock tower is a signal of renewal and life, it is a symbol of the culturally rich community that is exists in Midtown. Fixing the Katz Clock Tower is a celebration of all things Kansas City. The clock tower restoration is a symbol of the vibrant spirit of our city.
Katz Building History
The Katz Building, or “Katz Drug Store,” is a 30,000 square foot building built in 1934 and designed by local architect Clarence Kivett, designer of the KCI Airport, Intercontinental Hotel and Kauffman Stadium. The Katz Building reflects the melding of two architectural styles: Art Deco and Streamline Modern styles. The building was purchased by Redeemer Fellowship in 2011 from Cates Auction Company with the goal of repurposing the building for community use. It currently hosts the Katz Arts Project and Katz Midtown Market. Possible future plans include semi-permanent art studios, exhibition space, venue space and community activity areas.
Where is the Katz Clock Tower?
The Katz Building is located at 3948 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, 64111. It is the southwest corner of Westport Road and Main Street, arguably the city’s most prominent and culturally significant Main St. intersection.
